September 22nd was World Car Free Day and local MP Michael Foster joined in by ditching his car and getting about town on foot.
Car Free Day encourages people to leave their car at home and use alternative means of transport for the day. The aim is to cut congestion and air pollution (including CO2), while improving road safety and promoting good health.
Michael Foster MP said:
“I, like many people, rely heavily on my car but on Tuesday I took the opportunity to see if I could cope without. Cars give us freedom but can also cause problems: climate change, congestion, pollution. These are all challenges we need to face up to and that will mean changing our lifestyles. Today I was able to get out and about to meetings in the town by walking and using public transport. I appreciate it isn’t possible for everyone but if you can I would urge you to ditch your car for a day and see the town from the pedestrian perspective!
“I'm conscious that nearly 40% of our local residents have no access to a car at any time.”
